Sorority Pillow with Greek Letters

Delta Zeta Turtle PillowA hand made sorority pillow makes a great little sister gift!

What are your favorite colors? My favorite colors are pink and green together. That's why I love sewing Delta's with Zeta's and little turtles on pillows, because the colors are so bright and motivating. Same goes for making Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority gifts. The pink and green together just makes it beautiful, no matter what you are making.

I made this little Delta Zeta pillow with some leftover fabric that I already had in my fabric basket. The pink and white striped canvas brightens up what ever I make out of it. The green fabric is a knit, soft like tee shirt material.

I used the Greek Letter patterns for Delta and Zeta, but taped the 2 patterns together, so that the two letters could be joined as one. I like that because it is symbolic of sisterhood to be connected or joined to each other as sisters.  I use stitch witchery as a binding agent to iron the letters onto the back fabric. Once the letters are stuck on the fabric, then using the zig zag stitch on my sewing machine, I stitched all the way around the Greek Letters (Delta Zeta).

Then I got out my acrylic paints and painted a simple turtle crawling up the Delta. The fun part is adding embellishment to the turtle shell. Every turtle comes out different,  and that is what makes handmade gifts so unique...they are one of a kind.

The front and the back of the pillow are sewn together except for a hole left to put in stuffing. After stuffing, the opening  is closed with hand sewing.

The point is to MAKE SOMETHING YOURSELF.  Put yourself into making a gift and the recipient is sure to appreciate your efforts. Sorority gifts are treasures when made special by hand.

Delta Zeta Cross Stitch Patterns

Greek CrossStitchFor a Delta Zeta, this set of Cross Stitch patterns is a real find. Published in 1989, this Sorority Delta Zeta cross stitch pattern set is not likely to turn up for sale very often. There are 4 pages in the pattern set and I think all the designs are pictures here in the image. There may be more DZ designs on the back side of the booklet. You could message the seller to find out.

Anyway, I think the designs are quite beautiful, and for a DZ sister that enjoys hand work and making sorority gifts, this would be a great help for making unique Delta Zeta Christmas gifts. Just having these patterns available would enable you to cross stitch a small gift for any sorority occasion.  I only wish it were always available.

If you know where sorority cross stitch patterns can be purchased elsewhere, please leave a comment to help other sorority sisters who are looking for creative ideas like this.

Delta Zeta Scrapbook

Delta Zeta Scrapbooking KitHere is an idea for a Delta Zeta scrapbook using a sorority scrapbook pack.  You can always draw and cut out your Greek letters yourself, but buying a letter pack with Greek letters already cut and ready to go saves a lot of time. Each set also comes with other card stock shapes like the turtle for Delta Zeta. I have also seen tee shirt shapes that allow you to draw a design on your cardstock tee shirt.

This particular Delta Zeta scrapbook has incorporated a lot of leaves and flowers into the design which makes it have a natural look. I also really like the polka dotted pink ribbon that edges the scrapbook cover and makes a closure with a bow.

The fun part of making a sorority scrapbook is choosing your paper and ribbon. Any craft store like Michaels, JoAnns, or Hobby Lobby have an abundance of scrapbooking paper and card stock to choose from. Pinks and greens are luscious together so it is easy to make a design with your colors that does not clash, but looks lovely.

The scrapbook letter kits are not always available on eBay. Last I checked, I only saw a kit for Gamma Phi Beta with a picture of a Phi Mu set. The seller on eBay's name is Merry. I asked her what sorority kits she has available. This is her answer:

Julie- thanks so much for your note. These are the sororities that I have current kits for- AGD, AOPi, AST, AZD, ChiO,DDD,DG,DST,DZ,GphiB,KAT,KKG,KD ADPi,PhiMu,PhiSS,PiPhi,SSS,ZTA. I can also send you some directions for a number of things that can be made.

Another option for locating your sorority kit is through my friend Karen Hansen . Karen used to sell the kits on ebay in recent years. She has  alot of stock left that she  no longer has room for. Scrap Sacks used to sell for $9.99 on ebay but she is selling what she has left for $5.99 per sack plus $1 shipping.  Email her if you are interested at sororityspiritcolors (at) gmail (dot) com

Sorority Totes

Sorority Tote Bag

I have made sorority tote bags with out sewing them. The trick is to buy a pre-made off white canvas tote bag from Hobby Lobby or another craft store that offers them. I have even found the canvas bags on sale for half price several times, which saves a lot.

I included a picture of a Delta Zeta tote that I painted to show you and example of what you can do.

You know, I always start with a simple drawing on paper for my pattern, in this case a turtle.  When painting on fabric, very often, you can just put the pattern behind the fabric (after going over the lines with a black marker to emphasize them) and you can see the line through the fabric. Unfortunately, canvas is too thick to do this. So to get my turtle pattern onto the bag, I trace my pattern onto a piece of cardboard or card stock and cut it out. This makes a template of the outer lines of the turtle. With a pencil, I lightly trace around the turtle template onto the canvas. That gives me the basic line and then I can free hand the inner lines of the pattern. Getting the pattern penciled onto the canvas is probably the hard part.

Once you have your pattern drawn on the canvas, then you get out your pink and green paint, or go to the store and buy some if you don't have any. I keep a supply of most colors of acrylic paint and I also keep so good quality paint brushes on hand always for projects like this.

I had some nice pink rick rack so I sewed that along the top edge of the bag. There is fabric glue available if you don't sew. Last, I tied a puffy pink bow around the handle of the tote for a nice touch.

DZ ideas

(the cardboard DZ patterns shown above are not the right pattern, but I am showing you what I mean by a cardboard template to trace around.)

Delta Gamma Monogrammed BagSorority Totes are available almost any store that sells sorority merchandise and gifts. I found this Delta Gamma tote bag on eBay selling for $18.99. It is an attractive bag and that is probably a fair price, but a sorority tote is another item that we, here at Sorority Sisters website, think you may want to consider making for yourself or as a gift. After all tote bags are pretty easy to sew.

Little Sister Gifts-DZ

Sorority Little Sister Gift Idea

A gift bucket or basket like this one...

for Delta Zeta is a great way to make your little sister feel extra special! Fill a basket or a  bucket with a bunch of little gifts such as a  journal or composition book, stationary or notecards,  scrapbooking die cuts, a sorority luggage tag, sorority pencils,  and maybe some stickers. Make the items yourself to save money or just add your Greek letters to pre-bought items. It is so much fun and really makes your gift special to the recipient.

Looking at creative sorority gifts that other people have made inspires me and sparks my creative ideas. I hope it will do the same for you.

Some of you are making great gifts for your Little or Big.  We would love to see them. In the comment section of each post on this website is an option to upload a picture. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, always take pictures of the gifts you make. You can share them easily with other Sorority Sisters through the upload in the comments section. Hope to see some great ideas!

Thanks to Merryrdh on Scrapbook.com for the great picture!
