I recently received this letter to my Etsy store:

June 11, 2012

Dear ____:

Recently, it has been brought to our attention that your company has produced, marketed and/or sold products containing the proprietary trademarks of one or more of our fraternity/sorority clients. We are contacting you because each of these organizations has contracted with Affinity Consultants to assist them in the growth and maintenance of their respective trademark licensing programs.

Pursuant to federal trademark law, any type of commercial reproduction of protected trademarks must be administered through a formal license agreement and approved by each respective Greek organization. These trademarks include, but are not limited to, the organizations’ Greek letters, name, nicknames, crest, badge and symbols.

We must also make you aware that neither members nor chapters of the various Greek organizations are authorized to grant commercial use of their organization’s trademarks and are required to purchase products exclusively from licensed vendors.

We must respectfully direct you to remove any listings containing our clients’ trademarks from your Etsy shop within two (2) weeks of the date of this letter. If any items are not removed within two weeks of this notice, we will contact Etsy’s Legal Department to remove or disable any infringing activity. (Etsy Copyright and Intellectual Property Policy:
In addition, please also discontinue any other form of marketing and/or sale of products containing our clients’ marks that you may be utilizing until you have received written authorization from the trademark owner(s).

To this end, if you are interested in using our clients’ marks in the future, we would require that you apply to become licensed by visiting If you do not wish to become licensed, we respectfully request that you confirm that you will discontinue the use of our clients' marks. If you are buying Greek embellished products from a licensed manufacturer, please let us know the name of the company so we can verify their licensing status.

We understand that you may have questions or concerns, which I would be glad to address. I can be reached via email at I look forward to receiving your response and sincerely hope to receive your cooperation in removing our clients’ marks or to commence a successful and mutually beneficial licensing arrangement with you soon.

My response to Natalie:

"Dear Natalie,
My sorority gift items on Etsy are removed.

From my experience, the girls that are in the sororities do not agree that they are not allowed to request a pillow to be made with the Greek Letters. They consider that their personal freedom.

By seeking out home crafters on Etsy with your warning, you are eliminating the small artist and taking away the unique and creative sorority sister gifts that the members want and seek out.

By sending out your letter to small artists, you are saying that we either have to have a big sorority merchandise business or nothing.  It cuts out the most special sorority gift creations that many sorority members search for.

I know this is probably just a job you have to do to make a living - , but it is very frustrating to all who appreciate one-of-a-kind, hand made sorority gifts. I am certainly not alone in these sentiments.
